Spread Some Commercial Gold Dust in 2009
My first vehicle was a 1952 A40 Austin Somerset. I did not have a clue, but did have a new licence and 40. It appeared large, cozy and the master drove me round the stop to exhibit me what a striking vehicle it was. You could state I learnt to operate a vehicle in that car. I was towed house with a fine guy in a Ford 100E. A job to date beyond sensible objectives it probably resulted in the next expiration of the Ford's engine. I was rather taken by the ZA therefore, planning by the adage of the "devil you realize", appeared for another. I discovered a ZB not far from, its just unique level from the ZA being a chrome reel which went straight along leading side instead of following around the wheel arch. Besides that it felt similar, but just what a difference. The ZA could have believed excellent following the "jelly on a spring" A40, but the ZB offered me a first inkling in to just what a huge difference over all situation could make. The ZB was tight, steered superbly and was easy and precise. But somewhat slow. At the very least no faster compared to ZA that I possibly could detect.
As knowledge is acquired, so one's objectives change. The thing that was a large, rapidly car seems to morph into anything somewhat dull. Besides a friend had acquired a Sunbeam Rapier which not just felt able to out accelerate the ZB, but had other new games to perform with such as for instance overdrive! Time for a change. From anywhere I bought a carefully customised Hillman Minx. It have been removed of their opera, had the rear home grips eliminated and was reduced, with fat (for their time) wheels and the compulsory double choke Weber. Finished off with quarter bumpers, it appeared very nice (for a Hillman Minx). The drummer in an area band took a fancy to it and offered me 100 (plus a leather waistcoat). I was tempted since for a few days I had regularly been pushing my nose against the window of a nearby car dealer's showroom.
Lurking at the back, ignored and apparently unwanted was a Storm Talisman. Fascinating! A fairly little fibreglass coupe, humorously considered a 2 + 2. The Talisman is what was identified in those times as a Aspect Car, as were early Lotus / TVR's / Rochdales / Ginetta / Elva's and a lot more expert manufacturers. The huge difference between Aspect Cars and the later System Vehicles is that the former were available as a collection of all new bits. Number scrambling about in scrap yards required!
The other big difference was that a lot of the part cars were a considerable development on the mundane promotions of the main manufacturers. I'd bought a copy of J. H. Haynes "Element Vehicles" so was well alert to just what a Storm Talisman was, that will be ironic in a way because what I ordered wasn't a Talisman at all! By a variety of persistence, and just being fully a pest, I was eventually permitted to purchase it for 100. It had been probably worth every penny in order for them to hold their shop windows free from spotty oiks, and I obtained to help keep the waistcoat!
The journey house was enlightening. Not only due to the mind numbing noise, but in addition the pure performance of the thing. I also learned that the obsolete turn on the dash was attached to an overdrive! That was great odd when it had been supposedly driven by way of a 1500cc Honda engine. Subsequent investigation revealed a good, cast metal, mass of a Triumph TR4 motor, complete with double DCOE Weber carbohydrates and some individual fatigue pipes that can have doubled for gutter down pipes. Ages later I learned that my expected Talisman was actually a Tornado Thunderbolt with a Talisman body grafted on. Not merely any old Thunderbolt but a Tornado Team race car. 130+bhp, stump dragging torque, successfully 7 speed gearbox and a weight of about 1500lbs. Pleased days!
